Feeling the Rhythm

I can confidently say that I have a personal project rhythm going and I'm happy about that.

I was busy with consulting before my last post, but after that, it ended. So, I'm back to my personal project. I've been able to keep a healthy rhythm of spending between 1-2 hours a night on it, and skipping it altogether when I need a break.

My rhythm

I wasn't sure what pace I could keep given the daily demands of running a household, being a father and being a husband, but the rhythm has revealed itself.

I always aim to only spend one hour a night on my project. I also like to line up my tasks for the next day. Usually tasks range from 30 minutes to 2 hours. I can get a general sense of how long they'll take, but if it's leaning towards the 2 hour mark, I try to break them down even further. Sometimes a 2 hour task, is a 2 hour task, so I leave it as is. That's the plan, and to keep myself true to that time limit, I started timing myself in 30 min increments. This is important, because sometimes I start reading up on something technical that I need to do and I don't realize how much time is going by. The timer let's me know that I need to wrap up my research and make a decision or make the research a new task.

Based on my logs, I can see that I usually float between 1 hour to 1 hour and 30 minutes. I was tired one night and just did 45 minutes. Another night I was making progress and at the cusp of making something work, so I went to the 2 hour mark. When I get to the 2 hour mark, I generally don't feel good about it, because I feel I need that time to keep the house in order and help out. My goal is to be more closer to the 1 hour mark, every day. I've managed to keep this up for a good while, so I believe I have my rhythm.

Progress

I've been making good progress. I've reached a point with creating event listings, where it looks polished and does all the necessary things, like showing a user that a listing is being created and allowing users to upload an event image. I'm at a point where I need to figure out what happens after a user creates an event listing. I'm going to create a mockup for this, but I'm currently thinking that I need to redirect the user to a page where they can view their submitted listings and edit it them when they feel like it. I'm using Firebase Cloud Storage for the images. It was easy enough to get up and running.

Life

I can't really think of anything that stands out. Just the hot weather that we have to deal with that isn't particularly good for infants. That makes life a little harder on top of trying to deal with a pandemic, because we can't really do much, except stay inside. August is here, so we should be getting some relief soon.
