Why I Write

I stopped writing posts for a bit, because I needed to re-evaluate why I write.

Even though I haven't written my posts, I've still been working steady on my app. I spent a lot of time making the main parts of the app look decent. I have the Facebook login and signup working properly and I'm moving onto creating user profiles. This is will require me to move to a different part of development, what they refer to as the backend in developer lingo. For the next while I'll be building this out. I suppose I could quickly rush through it, but I'm taking it as an opportunity to explore different methods of development.

Life

I stopped writing for a bit, because I was questioning why I was doing it. In the beginning I was doing it to remind myself to keep working on my project consistently. Now, I'm working on it consistently, regardless of whether I write about it.

Then I wanted to keep writing, because I thought I could write some technical stuff that I thought that some other people might find helpful. Writing technical stuff, requires a lot of effort and it prevents me from working on my project, so I stopped doing that.

I decided to keep it simple by giving brief updates on my project and my personal life. I always had hesitations about writing personal stuff, but my wife liked reading it to see my perspective on things, so I kept doing it. I suppose she could just ask me what I think about things, but it's not quite the same. If you've communicated to the someone in person and in writing, you'll notice that you are talking to two different people. It's really interesting when you think about it.

After a while, I was just wondering what benefit I was getting out of writing these posts. Once I had time to think about it, I came up with this non-exhaustive list:

  • Keep a public running log of my project progress. This helps me think about what I should do next. I also hope to demonstrate that big things can be accomplished if I steadily chip away at them.
  • Sharpen my writing skills. This is a skill I always like to keep developing.
  • Let my wife peek into the other part of my mind. I suppose I could write her weekly notes and leave it on her night stand, but that seems overly sweet and strange.
  • Express myself through writing. I find it somewhat therapeutic to write, even if my words sometimes go into a void.

I will keep writing. I will continue my progress updates. I will give the people (myself) what they (I) want.
